Aquaponics

This is a method of growing food that combines features of aquaculture (growing fish) with hydroponics (growing vegetables in water). It is a self contained recirculating biological system where the plants help the fish and the fish help the plants. The input to the system is fish food. The output is vegetables plus fish.

“The plants help the fish and the fish help the plants.”

Aquaponics at the Aquafarm is conducted as a form of protected agriculture. The crops are protected inside a greenhouse from the ravages of the outside environment. Hail, storms, hot summer sun, floods, birds and other pests all take their toll on conventional vegetable gardens.

Low water use, high productivity, low CO2 footprint and chemical spray free make aquaponics by many measures, even better than organic farming.
